I want to be like Bob

From the way Bob Ross lived and worked, we can draw an incredible amount of lessons that we reflect in almost every phase of our E-Learning. Maybe even in the form of a “What would Bob do?” A nod to the book “What would Google do?” I have this book at the office.

Before Bob Ross developed his unique painting method, he painted landscapes on the pans that prospectors used to search for gold in Alaska. In these works, mistakes had to be corrected, mistakes that resulted in frustration.

One of the first lessons, something a lot of people don’t know, is that you don’t have to be the first to be the most successful. Bob Ross learned his “Joy of Painting” “wet on wet technique” from Bill Alexander. Bill has also had a TV Program (The Magic of Oil Painting) for 12 years, for example:

Within 30 minutes, in the span of 403 episodes, Bob Ross painted two paintings per episode, for which he also made a preliminary study. Resulting in three works made per episode. In 381 episodes he painted himself, in the other episodes there was a guest painter. None of these works were intended for sale. So his product was not his painting, it was the transfer of the “Joy of Painting”. It is clear that a good business model can be linked to this, such as the sale of merchandise, materials, training (train the trainers). The business model has still not changed while a fair amount of work has been stored in the Bob Ross Inc. store.

What Bob made was not intended for sale, which is another way of looking at the value of your product or service.

He painted 30,000 works during his lifetime. In which there was no exhibition of his work. That wasn’t something he really needed either. Many people want recognition from the experts. While he got his recognition from his audience, which he reached through TV, among other things. In other words; don’t make your product or service for the experts, but make it for the people who see the value of it.

He took pleasure in the smallest repetitive parts of his work. The drying of the brush against his easel or the effect of a movement of his brush and what that resulted in. Enjoy what you make, but also enjoy the process itself.

In a world where everything revolves around growth and commerce, he stuck to what really mattered to him. Nature and the (injured) animals he took care of starting at a young age. The effect it has on almost every generation, including our generation, faced with the constant need for more. He still has the ability to slow people down. This is in line with our philosophy, you have to decelerate in order to accelerate.

Above all, we should remember his most famous lesson. There are no mistakes, only happy little accidents.
